AUTUMN SHOW 2012

The Saffron Walden Horticultural Society Autumn Show took place last Saturday, 22nd September at the Golden Acre Community Centre, Ross Close.

Visitors could not help but be impressed at the sight of a wonderful array of dahlias, chrysanthemums as they entered. Beyond them, roses, gladioli, displays of flowering trees and shrubs, fuchsias and pots vied for their attention. Jose Rumbo won trophies for best dahlia and chrysanthemum.

The floral arrangements entitled 'Accent on Wood' inspired five beautiful interpretations, Yvonne Bishop winning first prize.

Some vegetable classes were less well supported this year but very large onions, leeks, and parsnips were entered. Peter Cranfield won the Sewell Cup for most points, and the Babington Smith Trophy for most points in show. Robin Crouchman won the Ellis Rooke Cup for most points in all three shows of 2012.

In the domestic classes, Mrs Annie Erdman won the Rickett Shield for the best  exhibit, a very tempting Battenberg Cake and was awarded the Walker Trophy for the most points overall in that section.

Colourful and inventive Entries in the Junior Classes included iced biscuits, Christmas decorations, and hand written verses beautifully decorated. Becky and Daniel Leeman were jointly awarded the Scrivener Cup for the most points overall.

The Chairman, Mrs Doreen Townley, thanked the judges, show secretaries and also the Mayor, Cllr David Watson for attending and presenting the prizes. The Society is grateful to Ridgeons for the gifts they donated as raffle prizes. Nearly £200 was raised in total from the raffle, plant stall, teas and auction of produce.
