Spring Daffodil & Floral Show

The Spring Daffodil Show was held last Saturday, April 10th at the Golden Acre Community Centre, Ross Close. The sunny day outside showed the bright and colourful display of flowers and plants to their best advantage. The exhibits were of an extremely high quality, with entries up about 10% on last year. A significant number of new exhibitors was also very welcome.

Daffodils are the dominant exhibits at this show and there was a dazzling display of traditional as well as more modern and less familiar looking examples. The best in show daffodil was grown by David Hockley and entitled 'Goldfinger'. Tulips, primulas, other seasonal garden flowers, flowering shrubs and houseplants made up the rest of the plant exhibits.

A regular feature of this show is one in which members grow a daffodil bulb using one supplied by the club at one of the autumn meetings. Twenty two members mananged to time things right in order to get their bulbs to flower at exactly the right time.

In the domestic section, there was the usual display of delicious looking cakes and other food and drink items.

One unfortunate feature for this show was the lack of junior exhibitors. This can perhaps be accounted for by children being away during the Easter break. We certainly hope to welcome our many junior exhibitors back for the next show.

The Town Mayor was unable to attend and in his absence, the chairman Doreen Townley and Robin Crouchman together presented the prizes. Doreen Townley expressed her thanks to the hard-working Show Secretaries, Yvonne Bishop and Kate Chambers. Maureen Lord and Peggy Baggaley were also thanked for providing some very welcome refreshments. Thanks too were given to the judges, to show stewards, and to all committee members, all of whom had helped to make the show such a success.

During the course of the show, about £110 was raised in aid of society funds. This was made up of profit on refreshments, sales of plants donated by members and a raffle. For the raffle we are grateful to Waitrose for their donation of a 'box of goodies' which Harry Green was lucky enough to win.
