SPRING DAFFODIL AND FLORAL SHOW 2011

The Spring Daffodil Show was held on Saturday, April 16th at the Golden Acre Community Centre, Ross Close. The exhibits were of an extremely high quality but unfortunately the number of entries was rather down on last year. This was predictable and understandable given the very early appearance this year of all spring flowers and the virtual disappearance in particular of daffodils and tulips by the middle of April.

Members did excel themselves and daffodils were nevertheless still the dominant exhibits at this show and made a fantastic display. Robin Crouchman who swept the board with his daffodils, also grew the best in show daffodil called ''Ombersley'. Tulips,  primulas, other seasonal garden flowers, flowering shrubs and houseplants made up the rest of the plant exhibits.

A regular feature of this show is one in which members grow a daffodil bulb using one supplied by the club at one of the autumn meetings. This class was victim of the early spring and disappearing daffodils and only seven members managed to hang on to their plants for the show.

In the domestic section there was the usual display of delicious looking cakes and other food, with Annie Erdman sweeping the board. Homemade wine was also represented.

The children's entries were interesting and imaginative. Charlotte Staniforth gained the most points overall but Danielle Kidd won the prize for the best exhibit with her decorated egg entitled EggBob, RoundPants, the idea being inspired by SpongeBob, SquarePants.

The Town Mayor, Bob Eastham together with the Mayoress Sarah Grimshaw attended to present the prizes. The Chairman, Doreen Townley expressed her thanks to the Town Mayor and to the hard-working Show Secretaries, Yvonne Bishop and Kate Chambers. Thanks too were given to the judges, to show stewards and to all committee members, all of whom had helped to make the show a success. Maureen Lord and Penny Baggaley were also thanked for providing some very welcome refreshments and also Margaret and Ron Snow who ran the raffle. Thanks too are due to Waitrose for generously donating raffle prizes. Proceeds from the sale of plants donated by members together with the profit made on refreshments and  the raffle will go towards society funds.
