SPRING DAFFODIL AND FLORAL SHOW 2012

The Spring Show was held last Saturday, April 14th, at the Golden Acre Community Centre, Ross Close.

Visitors were delighted by the many varied displays of daffodils, not only yellow, but white and many other colour combinations shown to their best advantage. The Daffodil Society Medal was awarded to Robin Crouchman for the Best Daffodil in Show (called Bossa Nova) which had lovely curved symmetrical petals and a dark orange centre. This attracted a lot of attention. There were also other flowers on the tables. E.g. tulips, sprays of heathers, flowering shrubs, alpines, cacti and indoor plants. The floral arrangement entitled 'Fun with a Few' was won by Mrs Ruth Coe. This included five bright gerbera blooms, corkscrew hazel sprigs and decorative butterflies, to striking and fun effect, and was much admired.

The displays of children's exhibits included photographs of 'A Day Out', Vegetable Birds, Spring Flowers; Decorate an Egg, and drawings of a Spring Lamb. Danielle Kidd's lifelike drawing of a Spring Lamb was judged best in the junior classes, and she was awarded the Rickett Shield. Ben and Sam Harris entered many junior classes and were jointly awarded the Scrivener Cup for the most points overall.

On the domestic table many foods were displayed including hot cross buns, Spanish Madeira cake (from a given recipe), cheese straws and shortbread fingers. Jars of marmalade and red white wine were also shown.

The town Mayor Mr Cliff Treadwell and mayoress attended to present the prizes. The chairman, Mrs Doreen Townley expressed her thanks to the mayor and to Yvonne Bishop and Kate Chambers (Joint Show Secretaries). She also thanked the judges, show stewards, and all committee members who helped to make the show a success, and Joan and Christina for the refreshments.

During the show a total of £147.20 was raised for the society funds. This was made up of profit on refreshments (£46.90), sales of plants donated by members (£46.30), and the raffle which raised £54. We are extremely grateful to Scotsdales for their donation of £15 worth of vouchers which was first prize in the raffle.
