SAFFRON WALDEN HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY

SUMMER ROSE AND FLORAL SHOW

The Summer Rose and Floral Show was held last Saturday, June 23rd at St Mary's School, Castle Street. The quality of the exhibits was as high as in previous years but the number of exhibits was down a little on last year. This was particularly the case in the rose classes, probably due in part to roses having flowered very early and also to the recent downpours which have damaged the blooms. However David Livermore, the Winner: of the best rose in the show called 'Savoy Hotel' managed to beat the unfavourable weather.

The sweet peas and other summer flowers, added to the colour and the fragrance of the exhibits, whilst displays of foliage, pot plants and flowering shrubs added a touch of green. Fruit and vegetables were also in evidence.

The floral arrangement class was of particular interest. The theme was 'A Song Title' and the three very different exhibits each represented a different song: the Winner, Yvonne Bishop with an elegant and stylish 'Green Grow the Rushes, O'; a rather unseasonable 'Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer'; and 'Sound of Music' with its alpine feel.

In the domestic section, cherry cakes were in abundance and looked very appetising. The homemade wines looked tempting too but only the judge was fortunate enough to be able to try them.

The eight junior classes comprised flowers and plants as well as including a number of interesting craft items. Best of the junior exhibits was in the 'Vegetable animal' class and the 5-year old Winner, Abbie Bennett ingeniously made a cat using a cabbage, a banana, an orange and several pieces of carrot and cucumber.

The Town Mayor, Mr Sarfraz Anjum and the Mayoress Mrs Anjum kindly attended to present the prizes. The Chairman, Mrs Doreen Townley expressed her thanks to the Town Mayor and to the hard-working Show Secretaries, Mrs Yvonne Bishop and Mrs Kate Chambers. Thanks too were given to the judges, to show stewards and to all committee members, all of whom had helped to make the show such a success. Maureen Lord was also thanked for providing some very welcome refreshments.

The society’s Autumn Show (September 22nd) will be held in the United Reformed Church Hall, Abbey Lane
