SUMMER ROSE AND FLORAL SHOW 2011

The Summer Rose and Floral Show was held last Saturday, June 18th  at the Golden Acre Community Centre, Ross Close. As always, the quality of the exhibits was excellent with  entry numbers only very slightly down on those of last year. There were lots of  visitors and we were pleased to see our usual members as well as quite a number of people living nearby.

Roses give their name to the show but they are not the only exhibits. However, the roses made a very good display with the prize for best rose in the show being awarded to David Livermore for a rose called Savoy Hotel. The other star of the show was a vase of beautiful pink sweetpeas entered by Ken Peck. This entry was first in its class but was also given recognition by the Essex Guild of Judges as an outstanding exhibit. This honour is given only very rarely and only to an entry of exceptional quality. There were of course other sweetpeas as well as other summer flowers and pot plants adding to the general colour and fragrance of the occasion. In the floral arrangement class, there were two excellent but very different entries making the judge's decision impossible, so that in the end they were awarded joint first prize.

Fruit and vegetables really come into their own for the Autumn Show, but this year the vegetables were unusually very much in evidence with five entries in the class for a collection of four different vegetables arranged on a tray. Hamish Davidson won this class with two magnificent cauliflowers forming one item of his four vegetables.

The domestic section included a variety of cakes,  jam, lemon curd and homemade wines. The craft included knitted, crocheted, embroided items as well as lace and paintings. The photography section included photos of flowers and other horticultural subjects.

A particularly amusing class in the children's exhibits was a decorated wooden spoon, the winner depicting a one-legged, one-eyed pirate.

The Town Mayor, Cliff Treadwell together with the Mayoress Val Treadwell attended to present the prizes. The Chairman, Doreen Townley expressed her thanks to the Town Mayor and to the hard-working Show Secretaries, Yvonne Bishop and Kate Chambers. Thanks too were given to the judges, to show stewards and to all committee members, all of whom had helped to make the show a success. Maureen Lord and Penny Baggaley were also thanked for providing some very welcome refreshments and also Margaret and Ron Snow who ran the raffle. Thanks too are due to Homebase for generously donating a voucher as the main raffle prize. Proceeds from the sale of plants donated by members together with the profit made on refreshments and the raffle amounting to about £130 will go towards society funds.

The society’s Autumn Show (September 17th) will also be held at the Golden Acre Community Centre, Ross Close.
